A Moment to Watch
So I was headed over to my good friend Andrew's place in order to work on my music and just hang out a while. As I get off the subway I notice a blind man start to make his way down the stairs. He was moving slower than the other passengers and I decided that he may need some help and I slowed down my pace so that I would not pass him by. And I walked down the stairs beside him and he likely had no clue. Once we got to the bottom of the stairs I asked him if he needed any help. He thanked me and declined explaining that he comes here everyday and that it's become very familiar to him.
As I continued to walk beside him I noticed that at a certain point in the floor it made a different sound that was very noticable when his cane hit it. I figured that this must have been a marker for him. As I continued to walk beside him and watch him once he got to a certain point he stuck his cane a bit further to the right and hit it againt the pillar. If he had stuck it out just a bit later then he would have missed it and not known whether or not to turn there in order to get to the buses.
After watching this I pondered...Now change can be an amazing and wonderful thing when it causes improvements, but for some people even though that change may benefit many others, it can be detremental to someone who can't identify or has difficulty adapting to change. I mean imagine that they fixed the floor so that it didn't make that seperate distinct sound or that they changed the location of the buses? How confusing would that be?
