Monthly Letter #1
Hello my faithful supporters,
It has only been a short time here in Halifax, but God is already doing amazing things. I spent the first few days in Halifax searching for a job. My dad showed me around Halifax and I’ve been getting to know the area fairly quickly.
The night before the project started 4 of us got together for a late dinner and got to know each other a bit better. I have been surrounded by a loving team. I have never found it so easy to get to know such a large group of people. We have 7 staff members, and 30 students on the team. There are 8 guys and 22 ladies. 3 of the female students have not arrived yet due to a late exam schedule. Two of the girls are in my apartment and one will be my room mate once she arrives. We are in apartments with 4 people and have 2 people in each of the two bedrooms. We have our own kitchen and bathroom in each apartment with a small living room.
It has been interesting to adjust to living away from adults. It takes a lot of communication to get to know who you are living with and to be able to live in peace. So far things are going very well and I pray that it continues.
During the weekend we listened to some teachings about confrontation, living the Spirit-filled life and the importance of discipleship. My favourite part of the weekend was not the classroom teaching, but the important values that we learned from some team building games.
We played various games including one where we were blind-folded. One of the guys couldn’t walk and 3 other members of the team were unable to speak. It was difficult to get things organized, but once one of the students took charge we became much more organized. We were able to find our other team members fairly quickly, but it took some time to complete the task since we were unable to see our objective.
Important lessons that I learned from the team building activities were:
-the importance of listening to others
-the importance of following instructions
-it is easier for the team to complete a task when one person is giving direction
-sometimes you just have to try something to see what works
-allow others to explain their idea without interrupting
-value others for who they are and what they have to say
-there are often many ways to solve a problem
Among other things God has really been challenging me to take initiative in managing my health. Since I am hypoglycemic it can often be difficult to know what I should eat and to plan snacks as part of my day. I have been making progress in my eating habits and many of the students on the team have been very supportive. Please pray that I will not grow frustrated when trying to figure out what I should eat, but that I will learn to trust God and make wise decisions.
Last night was our first opportunity to go out in the community to get to know people. It was a great learning experience and I had a great time with my partner. 2 people prayed to receive Christ and many of us have made contacts with people living in Halifax in order to form new friendships.
This summer is getting off to a great start and I believe many good things are still to come. One student mentioned a verse from Habakkuk 1:5,
“Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.”
It is my prayer that God would do such amazing things this summer that none of us would believe it if we had been told in advance.
Love in Christ,
Liz Stodolak.
