heh that's a good question.
I'm not sure if you wanted an answer (if it was just a rhetorical question), but I think it has to do with this idea that we're supposed to struggle and strive to attain wisdom, to "achieve enlightenment". Because of this silly Classical-thinking idea that this "wisdom" or "enlightenment" is the be-all and end-all of the human experience, people devote their entire life to it, and not to something, Someone worth so much more. Divine wisdom is the beginning of the human experience, not the end. This is why it is so simple, that only a child can understand it.
